Where to stay in Amritsar
Amritsar hotels & accommodations

We moved here from the Sawara Grand around the corner after just one night. Thank you Agoda for moving us. The Ramada is well situated for the Golden Temple, which I walked to early every morning and for the Partition Museum which is a "must see". Although we were there in winter and it was too cold to swim, it was lovely to sit up by the pool and look over Amritsar an...

Location: This is an excellent hotel in Amritsar and quite near to the Golden Temple. Check-in: Booked 3 rooms for 1 night out of which 1 room was upgraded to Suite by the hotel. Welcome drink was not provided and could've made our welcome even better after a tiresome journey in the scorching heat of Amritsar. Staff & Service: Service by staff at restaurant and at re...

The rooms were really neat, clean and good.Housekeeping and reception and all other hotel staff were courteous, more than helpful and prompt to assist and guide us. The location is also very good.... All things combined made our Amritsar trip and hotel stay very comfortable and enjoyable.... Thank you so much.

I am a solo female traveller that has been to India many times over the past 30 years. I found this hotel to be friendly, clean & accommodating & would recommend a stay. It is within walking distance to the Golden Temple & can help you with all of your adventurous needs. You can exchange money there which was very helpful. The food at the restaurant is also very good. ...

Surely one of the best in terms of service, friendliness, cleanliness and also security. Location is barely a 5 mins walk to the Golden temple. Located in the pathway to the temple, one can just go down to the shops around the area for great local merchandise. Housekeeping staffs were really very polite and totally value for money. Hotel of my choice in my next visit t...

My friend and I really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Hong Kong Inn. We needed a nice, comfortable, and clean place to stay after having some mediocre experiences in other Indian cities. The Hotel Hong Kong Inn was a much needed oasis amid the chaos of downtown Amritsar, and it turned out to be the favorite hotel of our visit to India. The staff went out of their way...

Good rooms, comfortable, clean beds, great shower and excellent location a short walk away from the Golden Temple. the only downside is that there's no restaurant so breakfast is in a partner hotel round the corner. Were I to go back to Amritsar, I'd be happy ti stay here again.

Location of this property is nice. Good market around with nice food offered in the morning to start with, but the best is if you wanted to explore the place better do it through the local auto. I found the staff good and helpful. We explored the city and Wagah using the local auto as he offered a good package for two days including wagah border. This guy (Mr.Karnail ...

when in amritsar- there are only 2 places to stay- 1.best western 2. hyatt. The best western provides all the facilities of a 5 star hotel for the price of a 4 star hotel. i went with my family as we had to go to the golden temple, and i can easily say that the hotel was as per our expectation- comfy and clean. I was a little apprehensive about staying in a dorm. All my price range hotels were full so I opted to stay here. Govinder checked me in at reception and the answered all the questions I asked while given a tour of the 4 bed dorm and other facilities. 1. Location : Really love the location. Only 5mins walk to Golden Temple, Jalianwala Bagh, Partition Museum. Easy to find the hotel and easy to get rickshaw/uber car. 2. Shopping : A lot of souvenir sh...

We were a group of 5 and booked 3 rooms. This 4 star business hotel is located in an upmarket location-Ranjit Avenue which has easy access to market and Golden Temple. Its a 20 minutes to half hour drive from Amritsar airport. The hotel is new so everything is swanky and well appointed. Room size is a tad small. The chairs provided in the rooms.do not have lumbar s...

The management is very friendly and helpful. The room was clean, comfortable and had plenty of light. The WiFi connectivity was great. Most of all, it is right next to the Golden Temple and the tourist promenade. You're in the heart of all activity. Restaurants, historical sites, the Sikh and Partition museums are all within walking distance. There's a SPLENDID view o...

The room was really small. we had to ask hotel staff to clean the room on daily basis. It felt like we are in a Dharamshala with an AC fitted. Staff told us during the night time when we went back to the hotel, that if we need the room to be cleaned then we have to leave our bunch of room key at the reception as they do not keep other pair with them.. Disgusting. Food ...

This hotel had good reviews, but failed to livd up to them in my opinion. I think there is a difference between expections of europen and Indian visitors. I checked out after 1 night and moved to the Holiday Inn which was far better. I'm not sure if I'll get charged for the nights I had booked but didn't stay but, I don't care, my stay in Amritsar was better once I had...

This is indeed probably the best hostel in India. The facilities are clean, staff are friendly and laidback. There's cheap tours but no pressure whatsoever to do them. The room is clean and the location is very close to the Golden Temple. However, the location is not easy not for the visitor but also to the locals. Sometimes the high voltage electricity especially for the a/c did not...

I think the location is the best of all hotels in Amritsar for the people to visit Golden temple. It is locate only a few minutes to the main gate and Golden temple can be seen from the roof top. I could go to the temple as soon as I wanted to go. There are many shops near the main gate and I could enjoy shopping, too. The room of a modern design is very clean and well...
Cheap places to stay in Amritsar

This hostel has a KITCHEN! and free to use. The staff is amazing. The manager, Happy (yes that's his name) was so kind and helping. The rooms are clean and nice. The location is close to the golden temple and the market. All our requests were met after a while. So no complaints. I found the budget and the best place to stay in Amritsar.

We stayed here for 1 night after our trip from Pakistan and on our way to Kashmir, the owner is kind enough to keep our luggage until we return. Staff are very friendly and always smile. Wow I loved this hostel. No one told me to write a review and I didn't even like the apathetic staff members. They were not helpful, not particularly friendly, and apathetic. While researching for hotels around Golden Temple, I stumbled across Shivaay Grand with absolutely no negative reviews across different portals. I made this decision to go for it for my trip of 3 days in Amritsar with my family of 10 people with children. And I was surprisingly amazed by what they had to offer. First of all the staff was so friendly and cooperative, ne...

We were comfortable at the Hotel Sukhman. Staff were friendly and responsive to requests re hot water (usually available but sometimes needed to request). Rooms were clean on arrival but no room cleaning/service after arrival. We stayed 3 days so this was not a problem for us - likely staff would clean room on request. Hotel is just 2 blocks away from a good night ...

The staff is very friendly and helpful. I think they need more improvement about the facilities and cleanness. We got room in the 3rd floor and no lift. Also, it will hard to use stairs for elder. The blanket is very smelly and there is not heater/ electricity blanket in the room so it is very cold during winter. However, the hot water is running well.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel in Amritsar. the staff were so helpful, courteous and attentive. Everything was pretty satisfactory in the Hotel the only problem was gutter-garbage smell while walking on the entry/pathway towards the main entrance.Management should certinaly work on this as everything IN the hotel was pretty satisfactory but they should work on the pathway which leads to the main entry, eventually the first impression would stay.

THE CITY NEEDS ATTENTION BY THE AUTHORITIES AS THEY HAVE DUMPED GARBAGE ON THE MAIN STREET DUE TO SOME STRIKE WHICH IS REAL THREAT TO THE HEALTH AND MUST MAINTAIN ABSOLUTELY CLEAN CITY BEING FULL OF RELIGIOUS MONUMENTS FOR WORSHIP.
Amristar is a Holy city and that's about it. The only good thing about the city is Golden Temple and the wagah border retreat.
Amritsar is more about the humble nature of the inhabitants. People were very polite and welcoming. The Golden Temple is a mesmerizing attraction.
It was the first time we went to the Golden Temple and it was simply breathtaking! For the Golden Temple, the flag lowering ceremony at the Wagah Border and the Jalianwalla baug.
Besides Golden Temple and Jalianwala Bagh memorial, most important place to be must visited by every Indian is Flag De-hoisting ceremony at Attari Check post at Indo-Pakistan Border.
Amritsar is one of the big cities in Punjab, located in north of Punjab near Pakistan border. City is a religious place with many tourist attractions mainly, golden temple, durgiana temple, ram bag.
6-7 hrs journey from Delhi by train. It is must go place. There are many reasons like Golden Temple, Bagha Border, Food, Shopping etc.
A city of Historic Importance and has played a significant role in shaping the history, culture and the Sikh Religion in Punjab particularly over the last 400 over years.
A very old city with narrow streets and heaps of garbage at all corners. Traffic is horrible. Town is so polluted .
Amritsar is lovely. The place to catch our breath (not literally because the air quality is not good in the city) after our hectice but not-so-pleasant stay in Kashmir.
Amritsar provides a great getaway in North India, both for the religious significance of the Golden Temple, the patriotism on show at the Wagah Border, and the many ancient monuments and landmarks that date back to the British ruled India (Jallianwala Bagh).
Nice homely town. Jallianwala bagh, Wagah Border and Golden Temple are the main attractions. Nice food joints which are quite old and provide delicious food at quite cheap prices.
Amritsar is nice place, but DONOT VISIT Wagha Border, unless and until you are VIP / Foreigner. No Discipline can be maintained by administrator, so senior Citizen Should avoid it.
Great city if you're Punjabi and or Sikh. If not, they slightly hesitant to outsiders compared to the metropolitan city Delhi.
good soothing and must visit place , the border of wagah, jalianwala baug and above all harmandir sahib.
Ancient walled city. destroyed and looted by invading armies many times.. Full of reseilient people, very hard working.
Golden temple or Sri Harmandir Sahib is a must see when exploring northern India. One of the utmost important shrine of the Sikhs.
Amritsar is a sprawling city - easy to get to by train or plane. Very hot here in the summer - regularly over 100 degrees - it was 115 degrees the days we were there so probably better to visit in the winter.

Discover Amritsar's Hidden Gems
While Amritsar is renowned for its iconic Golden Temple and rich history, the city also boasts a plethora of lesser-known attractions that are waiting to be explored. One such hidden gem is the Jallianwala Bagh, a historic garden that serves as a poignant reminder of India's struggle for independence. This serene space, though often overshadowed by the nearby Golden Temple, offers visitors a chance to reflect on the past while enjoying the lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere. Don't forget to take a moment to appreciate the memorial that commemorates the tragic events of 1919, ensuring that the sacrifices made are never forgotten.
Another captivating spot is the Durgiana Temple, often referred to as the Silver Temple due to its stunning architecture adorned with silver plating. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga and features intricate carvings that tell stories from Hindu mythology. Visiting Durgiana Temple provides a unique perspective of Amritsar’s spiritual landscape, allowing travelers to experience a blend of Sikh and Hindu traditions. The temple is less crowded than the Golden Temple, making it an ideal location for those seeking a peaceful spiritual experience.
For a taste of local life, head to the Amritsar Partition Museum. This museum provides a deep dive into the impact of the Partition of India in 1947, showcasing personal stories and artifacts that highlight the emotional and cultural upheaval. Interactive exhibits engage visitors and encourage reflection on this significant chapter in history, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in understanding the complexities of India's past. The museum stands as a testament to resilience and hope, making it a poignant addition to any itinerary.
Unforgettable Experiences in Amritsar
Amritsar is not just about sightseeing; it’s about diving into the local culture and experiencing the vibrancy of Punjabi life. One unforgettable experience is participating in a traditional cooking class, where visitors can learn to make authentic Punjabi dishes like butter chicken and dal makhani. Many local chefs offer classes in their homes, providing a personal touch and an opportunity to connect with the community. This hands-on experience not only fills your stomach but also enriches your understanding of Punjabi culinary traditions.
For those interested in the arts, catching a performance of Bhangra or Gidda is a must. These traditional dance forms are full of energy and joy, often performed at local festivals and events. Many cultural centers in Amritsar offer workshops where you can learn the steps and immerse yourself in this lively aspect of Punjabi culture. It’s a fun way to engage with the locals and create unforgettable memories while getting your groove on!
Another unique experience awaits at the Wagah Border Ceremony. Located just a short drive from Amritsar, the daily flag-lowering ceremony between India and Pakistan is a spectacle of patriotism, complete with music, dance, and enthusiastic crowds. Arrive early to secure a good spot, as this event draws visitors from both sides of the border. The atmosphere is electric, making it a perfect way to witness the spirit of India while enjoying a cultural exchange that transcends borders.
Best Time to Explore Amritsar
The ideal time to visit Amritsar is during the cooler months, from October to March. During this period, the weather is pleasant, making it perfect for exploring the city’s numerous attractions. The winter season also coincides with several festivals, including Diwali and Guru Nanak Jayanti, which are celebrated with great enthusiasm. Witnessing these festivals firsthand is an experience that adds a layer of depth to your visit, as the city comes alive with lights, music, and joyous celebrations.
For those who enjoy vibrant colors and lively atmospheres, the spring festival of Holi in March is another fantastic time to visit. The streets are filled with people celebrating with colored powders, music, and dance, creating a joyous and unforgettable experience. However, keep in mind that this time of year can be quite warm, so staying hydrated and wearing light clothing is advisable.
Summer months, from April to June, can be extremely hot, with temperatures often surpassing 40°C (104°F). While it may not be the best time for outdoor activities, visiting during this season can offer a chance to experience Amritsar’s quieter side. Many locals escape the heat, allowing for a more relaxed and intimate exploration of the city’s attractions. If you do choose to visit during the summer, plan your outings for early mornings or late afternoons to avoid the midday sun.
Travel Tips for a Smooth Journey
Traveling in Amritsar can be a delightful experience, especially with a few essential tips in mind. First and foremost, understanding local customs can significantly enhance your visit. For instance, when visiting religious sites such as the Golden Temple, dress modestly and remove your shoes before entering. It’s also customary to cover your head, so carrying a scarf or bandana is a good idea. These small gestures of respect will be appreciated by the locals and enrich your experience.
Safety is a priority in any travel destination, and Amritsar is no exception. The city is generally safe for tourists, but it’s wise to remain vigilant, especially in crowded areas. Keep your belongings secure and be cautious when accepting help from strangers. Learning a few basic phrases in Punjabi or Hindi can also go a long way in fostering goodwill and making connections with locals. Simple greetings like Sat Sri Akal (Hello) and Shukriya (Thank you) can earn you smiles and friendly interactions.
Lastly, don’t forget to carry some cash, as not all establishments accept credit cards. Local markets and small eateries may prefer cash transactions, so having some Indian Rupees on hand will make your shopping and dining experiences hassle-free. Embrace the local culture, and you’ll find that Amritsar is a welcoming city where every corner has a story to tell.
